“To one of the Black men who would not respect my clear no’s I said, “Do you know how hard I ride for you, how much I value your safety, how long our history is, and you can’t just hear me and respect me when I say no?” Milan said in her Facebook caption. “And understand that it is scary when a stranger grabs you as you are walking alone at night.”
While street harassment is a global issue with 65% of all women having experienced it, it can be especially harrowing for black women. Stop Street Harassment found that 48% of all Black women have experienced catcalling, which is 12% higher than white women.
This is especially difficult to grapple with when the men doing the harassing sometimes look like our fathers, brothers, and other men that we love.
